Emily Demming, an 8th grade student at A.G. Schmidt Middle School, and Sidney Crick, a 7th grade student at Lake Fenton Middle School, have taken the first steps to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning local competitions sponsored by the Fenton Lions Club.
Demming’s and Crick’s posters were among more than 350 entries at the two schools and among more than 375,000 entries that will be submitted worldwide in the 25th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace everywhere.
The winning posters were selected by Fenton Lions Club members based on originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme, “Imagine Peace.” The judging was held on November 7 at A.G. Schmidt Middle School.

Fenton Lions Club President Richard Lynch said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at both schools. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”
“Demming’s and Crick’s posters will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international competition if either one is to be declared the international grand prize winner,” Lynch said.

One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.
Locally, Demming and Crick and their parents will be honored for their participation by the Fenton Lions Club at a dinner meeting at Luigi’s on November 14. In addition, the winners received cash awards of $25 and the 2nd and 3rd place posters at each school received $15 and $10 respectively.
