Fenton-area financial services firm Shard Financial Services, Inc. and Kristy Cantleberry with RE/MAX Grande sponsored the inaugural 100 Women Igniting Change event at the Fenton Lucky’s Steakhouse on April 23. Whaley Children’s Center received a $6000 donation as a result of the evening.
100 Women Igniting Change is an invite-only program which meets twice a year. It was started by Margie Shard with Shard Financial, Kristy Cantleberry with RE/MAX Grande, Tonya Acha with Referral Institute of Southeast Michigan and Karen Church with ELGA Credit. At each event, women bring a $100 check and the name of a charity to drop in a hat. Four charities are selected and the nominators give a speech explaining why their cause is deserving of an award. During this event, Whaley Children’s Center was selected. Kylie Gates of Townsquare Media Group nominated them.

“A couple years ago when I did the Whaley tour, I was overwhelmed by the kids of Whaley, what the innocent kids had been through, and wanted to help. One of the things that I noticed when I was there was how institutional feeling the place was. Whaley does such a great job of providing the care, services, and therapy the kids need that they don't have funds or resources at the end of the day for ‘decorating,’” Gates said. “I got in touch with Deb Gerard, Director of the Baker College Interior Design Program, who linked me up with Kali Weber of the Zoie Sky Foundation and "Whaley Project Joy" was born! The goal: to help bring joy to the hearts of the children at Whaley.”

Project Joy will renovate 24 bedrooms in their current phase at the Mott Residence, making it feel more like a home for the residents. Whaley is still raising money for this task. Those interested in learning more or donating can do so at http://www.whaleychildren.org/get-involved/project-joy/.
Attendees were happy to see something so positive come to the area. The next event, set to take place September 24 will see another charity selected for donation. Those interested in becoming one of 100 Women Igniting Change should contact Shard Financial at 810.714.5566.
