Shard Financial Fundraiser raises over $30,000 for Food Bank

FENTON, MI (3-12-13)— The “Women, Wine, Fashion & Finance” fundraiser, hosted by Shard Financial Services Inc, raised over $30,000 to benefit the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan’s BackPack program.
The Food Bank’s BackPack program ensures at-risk children have backpacks full of food to take home during the weekend. The money raised will feed all eligible children in Genesee County with money going to Bay County as well.
With almost 400 guests in attendance and numerous local businesses sponsoring the event, the event was an overwhelming success. Bill Kerr, President of the Food Bank spoke at the event.
“When you have community leaders, such as Margie [Shard], put together an evening like this for a cause that you believe in, there is no greater feeling.”
President and Wealth Advisor Margie Shard, CFP® discussed how some women are falling into poverty at alarming rates and how she has witnessed life transitions through both family members and clients where women had to change the way they lived because of a lack of financial planning.
“Women being forced to change their lives when it could have been prevented made me stop and say ‘we need to do something about this.’”
A $1000 Women of Advancement Scholarship was awarded to Jessica Smith. Jessica is going back to school for special education degree – something she felt the need to do after volunteering at the Special Olympics.
Two volunteers were inducted into Shard Financial’s Hall of Fame – Tonya Acha of SE Michigan Referral Institute and Meg Vaughn of GM. Their tireless work helped make sure the event was a success.
Abby Rhoades of Fit 4 U was given the “Instigator Award” as a result of her work with “Roast Your Rump.” On Thanksgiving Day, she held a Zumbathon and cereal drive to benefit the Food Bank. She raised 100 boxes on her own, and instigated Shard Financial to start the ceral drive along with Midwest Soccer Academy. At the end over 1700 boxes of cereal were donated.
