Currency and Coins Cover Icy Roadway, But Not a Cent to Spend

Workers responded quickly with shovels to clean up currency and coins that spilled out on a Michigan highway Tuesday morning after the driver of an armored van carrying about $1 million in cash lost control in icy conditions.

The Loomis transport van was northbound on Saginaw Road north of Dort Highway in Vienna Township about 7 a.m. when the driver lost control and crossed into southbound traffic, Genesee County Sheriff Sgt. Pete Stocchi told MLive/The Flint Journal.

He said the amount of money that spilled from the van on the shoulder of the roadway and parking lot, where the van came to rest, was unknown. The transport company called in extra crews armed with shovels to help scoop up the money and take it away from the scene.

Officials with Loomis declined to comment on the accident, the newspaper said.

The drivers of the transport van and another vehicle involved in the crash were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and are in stable condition, the report said.

The crash occurred after an overnight snowstorm pushed the area over a record, making the 2013-2014 winter the snowiest on record in the Genesee County area.
