Fenton Volleyball Team Hoping For Metro League Supremacy

After going 8-0 at preseason Metro League tournament, Fenton volleyball team asserted itself as a league title favorite.

Two priorities the volleyball team has established for itself this season are related: the team would like to both win the Metro League title and go undefeated in the league in the process.

In the preseason Metro League tournament Aug. 20, the Tigers showed they have what it takes to accomplish those goals, finishing 8-0 on the day and sweeping every team 2-0 in the process.

"We had close matches with some teams, but played really well," said coach Linda Rusaw. "Our first two goals this season are to win the Metro and go undefeated in the league. That was a good start, but there is still a ways to go."

Experience will be a factor for Fenton this season. Despite losing three-year starters Sam Granger, Lauren Zepeda and Ally Rooker to graduation, the team returns several players with varsity experience.

Julie Gilber, a three-year starter, is the team's setter. Maizie Martin and Sarah Collier, both middle-hitters, are also back as is outside hitter Payton Maxheimer. Defensive specialist Sammi Cowger returns as well.

"We have a lot of versatility, that will be a definite strength for us," Rusaw said. "We have solid depth at every position and a lot of experience."

With so many capable hitters on the team, Rusaw has also changed the offense up a bit, using a three middle offense.

"That's a little bit stronger offense that compliments our strength with all of our hitters," Rusaw said.

Fenton is hoping to follow up regular season success with postseason achievements as well. The Tigers would like to end their four-year district title drought. Fenton is now 8-3 on the season with losses to tough non-conference foes Davison, Clarkston and Brighton Aug. 23, but strong opponents like those should help prepare the team for the playoffs.

"We'd like to win districts this year," Rusaw said. "We have to get better to have a shot at it, but I think our versatility will help."
