Lake Fenton Girls Basketball Season Ends
Blue Devils fall 61-40 to Williamston in the district semifinals.
FOWLERVILLE –– The Williamston girls basketball team hit five 3-pointers in the second quarter en route to a 61-40 win over in the MHSAA Class-B District 46 semifinals Wednesday.
As the Blue Devils walked off the court, it wasn’t all tears. Only one of them, Linda Marchlewski, was a senior. Three of the team's starting five were sophomores or freshmen.
Lake Fenton took a 20-10 lead at the end of the first after trailing by two early on. Madison Skinner capped off the 9-2 run with a 3-pointer from the top of the key following a steal by sophomore Sidney Scott.

However, the Hornets battled back and took a lead after a 3-pointer by Ashley Villarreal. Villarreal wasn’t the only Hornet to hit a three during the run, Jordan Waters and Emily Nemeth joined the triple show to help give their team a lead that they never gave up.
“We’ve watched them play before. The drive and dish play is a patent play they run,” Lake Fenton head coach Dennis Lucius said. “You just have to hope they don’t hit it. I’ve watched her (Villarreal) all season and she barely hit a 3-pointer all year long.”

Senior Marchlewski came into the game with less than a minute remaining and took just one shot.
Scott led all players with 10 rebounds. Madisen Nosek led the Blue Devils in scoring with 11.
The Blue Devils ability to get the ball in the paint to Makenzie Gottron early was key in the lead. Gottron, a sophomore, wasn’t able to connect on any shots; although, she was instrumental in helping her team force Williamston into foul trouble.
The Hornets put Lake Fenton into the double bonus just two and a half minutes into the second quarter. Hannah Rummell was the only player to attempt a free throw while in the bonus. She made good both shots.
“I think they made a few adjustments in taking away our low post game,” Lucius added. “Our wings weren’t hitting their shots.”
Despite the loss, Lake Fenton can look to the future with their entire starting lineup coming back.
“We need to work fundamentally and get better,” Lucius said of the teams future. “We need less turnovers, better passing and better shooting as a team. We’ve played some tough games this season.”
