Lake Fenton Students Honored for Academic Excellence

Awards for overall achievement and individual subjects handed out Wednesday.

There were more than 100 students honored for their academic excellence and more than 50 awards in individual subjects given out at the Wednesday night.

“We have a lot of names to read, which is a really great problem to have,” said assistant principal Tony Simmons, right before reading off the names of the seniors who had earned a 3.25 grade average in all of their classes for the year—a list of about 40.

Junior Ashley Rinks was called to the stage a total of seven times for awards in citizenship, physics, government, AP calculus, college research, chemistry and for having one of the top ten grade points in her class.

Rinks said she's not a bookworm, however, as she still finds time to have fun.

“I play softball and volleyball,” Rinks said. “And I hang out with friends, regular kid stuff.”

Rinks is hoping to study architecture in the future and credits her parents for her academic ambition.

“They always taught me to do my best,” said Rinks.

Seniors Clifford Everhart and Anastasia Bubin were both acknowledged for their being in the top ten for overall academic achievement. Additionally, Everhart took home awards for scholastic arts, theater and AP English while Bubin received one of the Business Management and Accounting Awards.

Everhart, who also plays percussion, is planning on attending Youth Ministry at Spring Arbor University next year. Bubin, who will be studying biochemistry at Kettering University, is also science-fiction book enthusiast and says math is her favorite subject.

“I like how things logically fit together,” said Bubin.

Alexander Brown and Kacey Phegley received the Leave Your Mark Award for being involved in every theater production during their four years at the school, an honor which allows them to decorate a cinder block of the wall backstage.

County Spelling Bee winners Wayne Ferris, sophomore who placed first in his class and Evan Korchnak, senior, who placed second, also received awards.
