
Spaghetti Dinner Benefits Scholarship in Local SEAL TEAM 6 Hero’s Honor
The fifth annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the John Wayne Marcum Scholarship Fund is being held this Saturday, September 14 from 4 pm through 7 pm. All proceeds will benefit the John Wayne Marcum Scholarship Fund that bestows one Flushing High School Graduate a $1000 scholarship annually. Dinner is $6 with raffles and other games available; extra donations are appreciated at the door. Furthermore, donations can be mailed to the Flushing Moose Lodge at 7044 N. Elms Rd, Flushing, MI 48433. Please indicate JWM Fund on the check for a possible tax write-off.

John was a 1991 Flushing High School graduate. He joined the US Navy that August and immediately started his training to become a Navy SEAL. When John was shot in battle in Afghanistan on Sept 11, 2008, he was on his twelfth deployment since 9/11. He had earned the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer and was a part of the exclusive Navy Seal “Naval Special Development Warfare Group” otherwise known as DevGru1 in military circles and “SEAL Team 6” in the media. He died early the next morning, Afghan time. John was highly decorated having earned numerous accommodations such as two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars with Valor, and a purple heart. He is survived by his daughter Madison Marcum of Massachusetts; his mother, Luellen Marcum of Flushing, MI; and his sister, Kaylee Pierle of Fenton.
