SLPR to expand senior programs at Fenton Community & Cultural Center

Senior Friday program expansion kicks off with free "Bring A Friend to Lunch" event August 14

Seniors are invited to attend a special “Bring A Friend to Lunch” event on August 14 as part of Senior Fridays at Fenton Community & Cultural Center. Participants will enjoy a free meal and the opportunity to meet new friends and play bingo, bunco, and euchre. The program starts at 9:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon.

“Bring A Friend to Lunch,” presented by Southern Lakes Parks & Recreation (SLPR), is part of a larger plan to expand program offerings for seniors at the Fenton Community & Cultural Center. “Bring A Friend to Lunch” attendees will be able to participate in a survey about programs they would like to see at Senior Fridays in the coming months.

SLPR has provided direct programming, as well as funding for senior programs, since its inception, but sees areas of opportunity to enhance the quality of life for the local senior population. Each year since 2001, per the Inter Local Agreement, SLPR has paid 19% of its millage to the Loose Senior Center in Linden, with the 2015 contribution totaling $72,700.

“We are very proud of our annual contributions to the Loose Senior Center, and we are proud to see Loose thrive,” Senior Fridays program coordinator Caitie O’Neill said. “At the same time, we want to make sure that we are meeting the needs of our community by offering programs that complement those of the Loose Senior Center.”

The Senior Fridays program takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every week. Currently, the program offers bingo and bunco for $1, euchre (free to play), and lunch every 4th Friday of the month for $4. Coffee, other beverages, and light snacks are also provided free of charge.

SLPR is exploring opportunities to provide immunizations and organize outings in the Fenton area as part of Senior Fridays. To provide your input about program activities, please call the SLPR office at (810) 714-2011.
