The Great Escape: Base Camp

Check out this week's daring adventure that will make your children and you, proud!

You just realized that all of your children are out of the house, and you have a chance for some well deserved 'me' time.  Well, grab your water bottle and forget the manicure, because this is not your average mom's day out.

Just about a 15 minute trip north from Fenton, you'll arrive at the Base Camp Challenge Center located at 5081 Torrey Road in Flint.

It may not look like much from the outside, but once you enter, you will soon realize that not only will you learn the basics and more about rock climbing, but you will probably learn more about yourself than you ever expected.

"This is a climbing adventure facility on steroids," said Rachael Abler, program developer and lead facilitator at the complex."

Abler shies away from using the word gym when describing Base Camp, mainly because she said the facility offers personalized attention, and teaches proper technique, depending on skill level. From the beginner to the advanced, all shapes and sizes, everyone is welcome, she said.

If you're feeling anxious about trying something new, that's a good thing.  Base Camp is the perfect place to overcome that anxiety, Abler said.

"We take people out of their comfort zone, and we do that on purpose," said Jim Gardiner, challenge course manager. "We don't let them get into the panic zone."

There is no doubt that safety is a top priority at the facility. When you first arrive, you'll sit around, campfire style, to discuss any concerns that you have and goals that you would like to achieve during your session.

Then, you'll move on to getting yourself equipped in the proper gear, whether it be a waist harness or a full body harness, and of course, a helmet. The focus is on teaching you how to equip yourself.

"You are less likely to try something unless you are able to trust and know how it works," explains Abler.

You'll also learn basic climbing terminology and how to and why you're tying a particular knot.

Base Camp began offering open climbing hours in January.  For $15 per Adult, you can come in anytime between 5:30 p.m.  and 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Reservations are recommended. However, if you find that you have some unexpected free time, walk-ins are always welcome. Just be sure to wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing and snug fitting, flatter tennis shoes.

So, on belay mom's!  Not sure what that means?  Don't worry, you'll know by the time you leave. And something tells me you're going to have a baby-sitter booked every Tuesday and Thursday from now on, too.

For more information, please call (810) 422-6030 and ask for Jim or Rachael.  You can also visit their website, after February 24th, at www.gascbasecamp.com.
