📰 News we're reading

1. Ferndale High School summer construction sees new fields, auditorium improvements (candgnews.com) — Ferndale High School students are returning to significantly upgraded facilities, including fully renovated baseball and softball fields with new turf and drainage, plus refreshed locker rooms and restrooms. The auditorium now has more seating, improved lighting, audio, and a new dressing room and costume spaces, all funded by the 2020 bond to enhance athletics and performing arts opportunities for Ferndale families.

2. Martin Road Park Service Facility construction targets October finish (candgnews.com) — Construction of the new service building at Ferndale's Martin Road Park is on track to finish in October, bringing much-needed restrooms, concessions, and storage to support the busy splash pad and other activities. Additional playground upgrades are now planned for spring 2027, with a ribbon-cutting for all improvements next year, while Harding Park's inlink rink is about halfway done.

3. Tri County Educational Center enrolled 11 multiracial students in 2024-25 (seoaklandnews.com) — Families in the Ferndale Public Schools district can see how Tri County Educational Center's student body is changing, with 11 multiracial students making up just over 3% of its 2024-25 enrollment. The report also notes districtwide trends, including Ferndale High School having the largest multiracial enrollment and statewide declines in overall student numbers since before the pandemic.

4. US cities are quietly replacing Flock cameras with alternatives (newsweek.com) — Ferndale is among several U.S. communities that have shifted from Flock Safety's license plate cameras toward Axon's competing system as cities reassess their surveillance tools. The move reflects a broader national trend balancing public safety benefits with growing concerns from privacy advocates about large databases tracking drivers' movements and how that data is managed and shared.
