Essential Massage Therapy brings ancient healing therapies to downtown Ferndale
Essential Massage Therapy in downtown Ferndale now offers acupuncture, cupping and meditation

While technology and medicine race forward, some of the most effective treatments for stress and other ailments remain techniques developed thousands of years ago. That’s why this April, Essential Massage Therapy is adding three ancient healing therapies: acupuncture, cupping and meditation offering Metro Detroiters a more holistic way to combat stress, fatigue, high blood pressure and more.
The three therapies date back as far as 1500 B.C., with the first reference of cupping appearing in the world’s oldest medical book. Cupping was first used by the Egyptians in 1550 B.C. to increase blood flow and kick-start the body’s natural healing response.
Often described as reverse massage, cupping uses concentrated suction, drawing layers of muscle and connective tissue away from the body to create a luxurious stretch, similar to myofascial release.

Practitioners at Essential Massage are trained to incorporate both stationary and sliding cupping for a unique, effective bodywork experience. Cupping can be added on to any other service for $30.
Clients may also choose to try acupuncture, another therapy newly offered at Essential that encourages natural healing. Acupuncture activates the body’s healing mechanisms by inserting hair-thin needles into the skin to trigger certain pressure points in the body. Hour-long sessions are available five days a week and costs $65.

Meditation has also been added to the services line-up.
“People have developed an overwhelming need for a way to cope with stress and meditation is one of the best ways to achieve this,” said Lisa Boyd, therapist and owner of Essential Massage Therapy. “Our weekly meditation classes are a great way to unwind during the week and learn several relaxation techniques to implement into daily life.”
Hour-long one-on-one appointments are available on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (cost: $70), and weekly Transformation Tuesday classes are held every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (cost: $10 per person). Each class will has a different meditation theme and consists of a 10-minute talk, followed by a 25-minute guided meditation and finishing up with a discussion afterwards. To reserve a spot in the class, call Essential Massage Therapy at (248) 547-5428.
