“I think it is more about building connections within the Ferndale nonprofit community that makes this event special,” said Matt Nowaczok, event facilitator. “It is important that all the nonprofits have a good working relationship so that we can keep Ferndale moving forward.”
At least 60 players are expected to take part in this year’s challenge, a significant increase from last year’s 40 participants and two teams. Organizers hope the event will once again bring together a group of diverse people for a game of fun, regardless of their athletic ability.
Family and friends are also encouraged to come and cheer the teams and participate in a picnic afterward.
“It is important to let the community know what we are doing and why,” said Chairwoman of the Kickball Challenge Joann Willcock. “We are helping your neighbors because that’s the kind of community that Ferndale is; helping one another.”
Teams are still looking for players. If you are 18 or older and are interested in playing in the Ferndale Kickball Challenge, please contact Matt Nowaczok at matt.nowaczok@yahoo.com or Joann Willcock at jwillcock@ferncare.org or call 248-398-8219. Registration costs $20 per player and includes a T-shirt.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the city-wide team. This version corrects that.
