Ferndale Public Library to Reopen Soon After Natural Gas Leak

The library was closed Thursday so workers could repair the leak, discovered in a parking lot about 18 feet from the building.

FERNDALE, MI — The Ferndale Public Library could reopen Saturday after a small natural gas leak discovered in the parking lot forced an emergency closure Thursday. The leak was about 18 feet from the building at 222 E. Nine Mile Road.

Ferndale Fire Marshal Brian Batten told The Daily Tribune workers hoped to resolve the problem Friday so the library can reopen Saturday. The library is normally closed on Fridays.

Fire officials said surveyors drilling soil samples in the parking lot east of the library on Thursday hit a pocket of natural gas in the ground — not in a gas line — to determine the suitability of the land for a mixed-use development and parking structure. Workers had previously patched the leak of naturally occurring natural gas, The Daily Tribune said.
