Firefighters Rescue Two Cats from House Fire, Occupant Uninjured

The responded to a house fire Saturday evening on the 1500 block of east Chesterfield, Fire Marshal Brian Batten said.

When firefighters arrived, the second floor of the residence was fully engulfed in flames, Batten said. "The lone occupant had escaped, and the firefighters were able to rescue two cats," he said.

He added that the fire was started from the "careless disposal of smoking materials."

Batten estimated the damage at approximately $40,000.
