Five Attractions You Can Only See In Detroit

Detroit has plenty of things to see and do - but some of them might not be as obvious as others.

No matter what size a city is, every city has their own unique sights to see and places to visit. Of course, if you travel around long enough, you’ll start to notice a few similarities -- there’s always an art museum, there’s always a skyscraper, there’s always a big park that might serve as a space for concerts and festivals, and so on.

Sometimes the best travel spots are the things you can’t find anywhere else. There’s always something off the beaten path or something you can’t find anywhere else in the world. So the next time you plan a trip, why not look for some spots like these in Detroit?

The Henry Ford Museum: Sure, every city has museums, but The Henry Ford is unlike any museum you’ve been to beforehand. Centered around the booming auto industry in Detroit, the Henry Ford proudly displays important cultural artifacts such as the bus Rosa Parks began her protest on, the limousine President Kennedy was riding in during his Dallas assassination, and more one-of-a-kind exhibits that make history a little more tangible and accessible than a bunch of paintings or letters hanging on a wall ever would. Check out the Henry Ford and learn why Detroit was, is, and always will be the Motor City.

The Heidelberg Project: Speaking of museums, The Heidelberg Project is also a big home for art projects in Detroit - but it isn’t quite what you’re expecting. Named for the neighborhood in Detroit that the Project is located in, The Heidelberg Project is an open-air, living art exhibit taking up an entire city block of Detroit. Homes are converted into massive art projects, trees are decorated, fences are painted, and the entire neighborhood comes alive as one massive display of Detroit’s creative side. Drive through, stop and walk around, just make sure to experience it anytime you’re in Michigan.

Synergy at Greektown: If you’re the gaming type, Greektown Casino’s newest attraction might be right up your alley. The casino recently introduced Synergy, a unique gaming arena that offers over 40 connected table games that all play with each other and includes a live dealer at the front of the room for each game! The technology and presentation used in Synergy are completely exclusive to Greektown and aren’t available anywhere else in the world, so if you’re looking for brand-new games that you can’t get anywhere else, give Synergy a shot. First, Detroit revolutionized cars, maybe games and casinos are next!

Haunted Detroit Tours: Halloween may have come and gone, but there’s truly no rest for the wicked in Detroit, as you’ll learn on Haunted Detroit Tours. Brave explorers can take a chartered tour around the metro Detroit area to see a number of (supposedly) haunted locations, all while equipped with their own ghost hunting tools like an EMF meter! Certainly not for the faint of heart, as many visitors have allegedly had their own encounters. But if you’re interested in the darker side of Detroit’s history, why not take a tour?

The Giant Uniroyal Tire: In Allen Park, a suburb of Detroit located close to I-94, you can see the Giant Uniroyal Tire, which is a...huge tire! Originally constructed in the 1960s as a Ferris wheel for the New York World’s Fair, the Uniroyal Tire stands proudly as a way to welcome people into Detroit, or bid them a fond farewell on their way back to Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

There’s tons more to do and see in Detroit, but these might be the five most unique and off-the-beaten path attractions the Motor City has to offer. Whatever your business is in Detroit, make sure to catch at least one of these - you’ll be glad you did!
