"A family generally saves at least $1,000 by cloth diapering, and can save even more, depending on the type of diaper they chose," she said.
The prices vary - a new cloth diapering system could cost as little as $300 for prefolds and covers to $1,200 for more expensive all-in-one diapers. "Still a huge savings," she said.
The diapers can also be re-used on siblings, increasing the potential savings.
What you need
You'll need diapers, wipes (cloth wipes are also available), a pail with a reusable pail liner, and a wet bag to put dirty diapers in when out and about, Murray said. You'll also need to use a laundry detergent that is safe for cloth diapers.
How to get started
Check out the options online and consider what type of cloth diapers would work best for you. Or take a cloth diapering class, Murray said - Modern Natural Baby offers classes at its downtown Ferndale shop at various times. The next class is March 24.
