Free Compost Available for Ferndale Residents Starting Saturday

Free compost will be distributed every Saturday in May from 8 a.m. until noon at the Southwest Storage Yard behind Ferndale High School.

Starting Saturday, May 5, Ferndale residents can pick up free compost at the Southwest Storage Yard located off Central and West Marshall behind .

In Ferndale, leaves and grass clippings are delivered to the SOCRRA compost site and made into compost. SOCRRA compost is then returned to the cities and distributed free to residents.

Compost will be distributed every Saturday in May from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Residents can load their pick-up trucks or take smaller amounts.

You must be a Ferndale resident to participate - driver's licenses will be checked.

Compost is organic material that is created by combining organic waste and can be used as a soil amendment or as a medium to grow plants. According to the Ferndale Department of Public Works, compost retains water, encourages root growth, aerates soil, releases nutrients slowly, supports beneficial microorganisms and earthworms, and suppresses some soil-borne diseases.
