Pedestrian Safety Is Aim of Ferndale’s ‘Walk Your Wheels’ Campaign

Whenever you see these signs — or when you're riding on a busy stretch of sidewalk — hop off and walk.

FERNDALE, MI — Bicycles and busy sidewalks are a dangerous combination, especially in the summertime when events like this weekend’s Woodward Dream Cruise and others bring increased traffic to a Nine Mile Road’s sidewalks, already busy with shoppers, diners and bar patrons.

Keeping people safe is the rationale behind the city’s “Walk Your Wheels” campaign and signs that have been posted throughout the downtown district, including initial blocks of both Nine Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, as well as E. Nine Mile Road between Woodward Avenue and Paxton.

“The idea is simple,” the city said in a news release. “Sidewalks in areas of both downtown and east Ferndale are heavily used, and therefore prone to make both pedestrians and cyclists unsafe. So we're asking that these walkways be used for exactly that — walking. If you're on a bike, be a pal and walk your wheels.”
