Principal Flutist of the New York Philharmonic to Present Concert and Masterclass on March 7 in Ferndale

The Southeast Michigan Flute Association (SEMFA) welcomes Robert Langevin and David Gilliland in recital on Saturday, March 7 at 2:00 PM, Ferndale First United Methodist Church, 22331 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale. The program will feature exciting and infrequently performed works for flute and piano including Mozart’s Rondo in D major KV 373, Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, J. Hétu’s 4 Pieces for Flute and Piano and R. Strauss’s Sonata for Flute (Violin) and Piano in Eb, Op. 18.

Langevin is the Principal Flutist of the New York Philharmonic, in the Lila Acheson Wallace Chair, and Professor of Flute at the Julliard School, the Manhattan School of Music and the Orford International Summer Festival. In the past, Langevin played with the Pittsburgh Symphony and spent 13 years with the Montreal Symphony, appearing on more than 30 recordings with the orchestra. He has premiered several pieces in both Canada and the United States. Langevin is also a member of the Philharmonic Quintet of New York. He is a 1976 graduate of the Montreal Conservatory as a student of Jean-Paul Major, and a 1979 graduate of the Staatliche Hochschule für Music in Freiburg Germany as a student of Aurèle Nicolet.

David Gilliland is a highly regarded collaborative pianist. He has performed with many leading artists including flutists Jasmine Choi and Denis Bouriakov, Joseph Alessi (trombonist), and George Shirley (vocalist). In 2014, Gilliland joined the Davidson College Music Department as their Artist Associate of Accompanying after spending nine years as the staff pianist for the University of Michigan Wind Department. Gilliland has graduate degrees in accompanying from the Eastman School of Music (M.M.) and the University of Minnesota (D.M.A) and has recently recorded the complete wind compositions of Henri Dutilleux.

Following his recital, Langevin will present a masterclass with four participants chosen from eligible applicants. Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to select orchestral excerpts to perform for this world-class orchestral musician.
