Raise a Glass to Help Goodfellows, Celebrate 78 Years Free of Prohibition

This holiday, revelers may want to escape the bustle with a few libations, but there's no need to seek out a speakeasy, thanks to the ouster of the 18th amendment in 1933.

Mark the 78th anniversary of the end of prohibition in style on Saturday as Ferndale vendors offer drink specials and an opportunity to give back.

This is the fourth year in which Goodfellows and downtown Ferndale venues become partners to celebrate the event and raise funds for needy families.

The Goodfellows is a charity group that raises money for needy families during the holidays. And local businesses are pitching in to help cheers its efforts.

Last year’s Prohibition event raised more than $4,300 for the Goodfellows, the Daily Tribune reported. The Goodfellows used the funds to feed, clothe and care for needy Ferndale families during the colder months.

Participants are asked to come dressed from the bygone era. Oakland County Commissioner Craig Covey is one of the volunteers for the event, and can be seen in '30s garb during the festivities.
