Tandem Campaigning: Candidate, Campaign Manager a Team on Wheels

Sherry Wells is running for City Council and tandem biking, too.

Two wheels, two handle bars, two seats, but one Ferndale City Council campaign.

Sherry Wells, who is running for an open seat on council today, along with her campaign manager Dave Cottrill, have gone a different route on mobilizing their campaign: riding a tandem bicycle.

"It's really ideal," Wells said on Election Day eve. "Campaigning is too much stop and go for a car."

Wells has owned the tandem bike for about 25 years, she said. She inherited it from a neighbor when he moved away and when she moved to Ferndale 23 years ago, it came with her.

"We'd put my daughter on the back seat and her father and I would just go for a bike ride," she said.

Now, it's served a purpose more than pleasure. "We've been using it for (distributing campaign) lit," Wells said.

Wells is running on a campaign of transparency and dialogue between businesses, residents and government. She's also active in the greening of Ferndale and says the fact she walks everywhere, she's literally walking the walk and talking the talk.

"I'm walking my talk on the environment, and it saves money," she said of riding her tandem bike.

Yet, she said, she doesn't always have a partner to ride the tandem. "A lot of times I'm by myself and someone will yell out that I'm missing someone," she said, laughing.

Wells is campaigning against incumbent councilman Mike Lennon and Dan Martin.

"I like to say that I'm not only running for council, but walking and riding," she said.

The polls are open until 8 p.m. this evening. For more information about Wells go . Check out Nov. 8 Election Central .
