Ferndale Wrestler Chevez Farris is Second Best in State
Farris loses in final Division 2 bout against St. Johns' Taylor Massa, a four-time state champion who has never lost a bout in four years of high school wrestling.
AUBURN HILLS – Chevez Farris came up short of winning a state wrestling title on Saturday, but walked away with second place and the knowledge that the wrestler who beat him is among the best the state has ever seen.
Farris was pinned in the final round of the 171-pound weight class by Taylor Massa, one of only 15 wrestlers to earn state titles four years in a row. Massa also is undefeated in four years of high school wrestling.
In the semifinals on Friday at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Farris beat Brett Dempsey of Mattawan 10-6 by decision. He won his quarterfinals match earlier Friday in a 5-3 decision over Lapeer West junior C.J. Melton.
