Flint council committee to discuss Berston Field House expansion, public safety (mlive.com) — Flint residents can tune in Wednesday as the City Council's Finance Committee reviews the nearly finished $42 million Berston Field House expansion and debates new funding for youth-focused public safety programs. Officials will also consider $20,000 for safe spaces and summer activities, part of the city's 2027 budget response to rising violence.
2. Flint to host free end of summer celebration Aug. 19 (mlive.com) — Flint is throwing a free End of Summer Celebration today from 1 to 4 p.m. on the back lawn of City Hall, honoring youth workers, ReCAST partners, and neighborhood organizations. Families are invited to enjoy the gathering as kids wrap up summer jobs and get ready for the new school year.
3. Flint Eastside Compassionate Mission receives $8K grant for children's Christmas program (mlive.com) — An $8,000 grant from the Child Welfare Society of Flint will help Flint Eastside Compassionate Mission brighten Christmas for children on the city's Eastside this holiday season. The longtime local nonprofit plans to use the funds for its Christmas Gift Program, with details and ways to help to be shared later this year.
4. Family pleads for answers after hit and run in Flint leaves 18-year-old hospitalized (midmichigannow.com) — An 18-year-old recent graduate remains in critical condition after a hit-and-run on James P. Cole Blvd. in Flint, and his family is pleading for information. Flint police are searching for a gray 2012 Chevy Corvette and asking anyone with details from around 2:17 a.m. on August 9 to contact them or Crime Stoppers of Flint and Genesee County anonymously.
5. Flint community rallies against gun violence after recent shootings (abc12.com) — After a week in which five people were killed in Flint shootings, residents gathered to push back against gun violence and talk about better options for young people in tense situations. About 50 community members shared experiences, including a father whose son survived a drive-by, hoping continued conversations will help the city change course.
