📰 News we're reading

1. Some Flint water settlement claimants must fix paperwork problems or lose share of fund (michiganpublic.org) — Flint residents approved for water crisis settlement money could lose their share if they don't quickly fix paperwork issues like missing signatures or Social Security numbers. A court-appointed Special Master reports thousands of claims are stalled, and a federal judge has ordered final 30‑day notices before those incomplete claims are permanently denied and closed.

2. Groundbreaking ceremony for Flint Police and Fire Training Center takes place (theflintcouriernews.com) — Flint has broken ground on a new regional police and fire training center at Stewart and Industrial, expected to open in early 2028 and serve more than 30 Genesee County governments. City leaders say the indoor firearms range, training towers, and renovated fire station will cut travel costs, improve year-round training, and replace neighborhood blight with a modern public safety campus.

3. Flint Mayor: We're taking the fight to D.C. for the residents (midmichigannow.com) — Flint residents waiting on water crisis settlement checks may see renewed pressure for faster payments, as Mayor Sheldon Neeley heads to Washington, D.C. to meet the court-appointed Special Master overseeing the $626 million fund. He says the city has replaced lead service lines and ended the emergency status, and now wants the distribution process sped up across all 30 payment categories.

4. Kings prospect named Flint Firebirds captain for 2026-27 season (mlive.com) — Flint hockey fans will see a new leader on the ice as Los Angeles Kings prospect Jimmy Lombardi is named captain of the Flint Firebirds for the 2026-27 season. Entering his fourth year with the team, Lombardi brings strong scoring numbers and experience as an alternate captain. He'll return from Kings camp ahead of the Sept. 19 opener against Saginaw.
