1. Flint and Bay City Report Recycling Gains -- Environmental Protection (eponline.com) — Flint residents are recycling far more than before, with household recycling up 253% since the city rolled out curbside carts and annual volume jumping to 2,200 tons. Backed by state and nonprofit grants, Flint distributed 68,000 carts and is also tied to a planned $12.7 million Genesee County Recycling and Education Center on Chavez Drive that will further expand local recycling access.
2. GISD Superintendent Dr. Steven Tunnicliff to retire at end of school year (theflintcouriernews.com) — Flint-area families will see a major leadership change at the Genesee Intermediate School District, as Superintendent Dr. Steven Tunnicliff plans to retire in June 2027 and Deputy Superintendent Tricia Hill has been named his successor. With deep local experience and UM-Flint training, Hill will work alongside Tunnicliff over the coming year to ensure a smooth transition for schools across Genesee County.
3. The Walls Were Smeared With Human Feces. The Floor Was Buried In Trash (lawenforcementtoday.com) — Flint residents are learning more about a disturbing child abuse case where police say two young boys with special needs were left alone for days in a filthy home. After a neighbor requested a welfare check, officers found hazardous living conditions, leading their mother to plead guilty to multiple child abuse and abandonment charges ahead of an October sentencing.
4. 100K Ideas, Huron County Economic Development Corporation receive $100,000 grants (wnem.com) — Flint's 100K Ideas program is receiving a $100,000 state grant to boost local entrepreneurship, expand access to startup capital, and connect residents with workforce resources. Leaders say the funding will strengthen existing small business and job-development efforts, helping Flint residents build skills, launch ventures, and navigate economic transitions more confidently in the years ahead.
5. Former Kmart finds new life, Mexican food truck gets full-time spot and more Flint-area business news (mlive.com) — Several new and returning businesses are reshaping daily options around Flint, from a quickly reopened Rita's Diner in Flint Township to a popular MexiCrunch food truck now serving regularly at Davison Farmers' Market. Residents can also look forward to a new Ollie's in Clio, Anna's House in Grand Blanc, and an expanded 7 Brew drive-thru drink spot nearby.
