• Michigan statewide cross country coaches poll for the week of Sept. 28, 2026 (theoaklandpress.com) — Gladwin’s boys cross country team has cracked the statewide Division 3 top 15, coming in at No. 15 in this week’s coaches poll. The rankings, based on projected MHSAA Finals finishes, highlight where Gladwin stacks up against programs from across Michigan and give local runners a sense of the competition they’ll face this postseason.
   

• October Hunting and Trapping Opportunities (theoutdoorwire.com) — Hunters in and around Gladwin County should note that chronic wasting disease has been detected in local deer, and the DNR is urging harvest reporting and disease testing across Michigan. October brings multiple open seasons for deer, waterfowl, small game, and turkey, with new mandatory harvest reporting rules and free or focused testing options to help protect wildlife and livestock health.
   

• Senate signs off on Schuette dam safety plan (gophouse.org) — State lawmakers are moving closer to overhauling dam safety rules after the 2020 failures that flooded parts of Midland and Gladwin counties, with one bill already headed to the governor. The plan would put all Michigan dams under EGLE oversight, tighten inspections, and require detailed maintenance and emergency records to better protect downstream communities from future disasters.
