Disturbing Details Revealed In MI Murder-Suicide Of 8 Family Members

Officials said a man fatally shot his wife and six kids before shooting himself inside a Michigan home last month.

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, MI — Reports revealed new details in the murder-suicide of eight family members in Michigan.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, fatally shot his wife, 39-year-old Amanda "Mandy" Karolkiewicz, and their six kids on July 24 inside their Grand Haven Township home before starting a fire and shooting himself, officials said.

Officials did not release the children's names, but an obituary identified them as Keegan, Bennett, Caroline, Ella, Smith and Teddy, ranging in age from 5 to 15.

Firefighters responded to the burning home and found all eight shot to death, most of them found in bedrooms. Death certificates showed all eight were shot in the head, WZZM 13 reported.

Mandy and Kristopher were found in their bedroom. Mandy was covered in blankets and had a pillow over her head, and a pistol was still partially in Kristopher's hand, WOOD TV-8 said, citing a police report.

The TV station also reported that Kristopher bought the handgun just eight days before the murders.

Officials said at least three dogs and a cat died in the fire. Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Captain Jake Sparks told TMZ other pets may have died in the fire as well.

Officials said the fires were intentionally set across the home's first floor and basement.

Mandy's father, Gary Anderson, told the Detroit News from his Royal Oak home that he struggles to understand why.

"I love my daughter Mandy, and I loved those six children. In a way, I still love Kris," he said. "I'm sure that will come out in the future. I have no idea why. Speculation is what I have a disdain for. It's very clear that he did what he did."

Officials have not yet determined a motive for the killing, but Reddit posts that appear to be from Mandy showed a darker marriage. In one post, she accused Kristopher of cheating on her with a younger intern.

A family friend also told 13 ON YOUR SIDE the murder-suicide came just weeks after Kristopher Karolkiewicz's employment at the American Heart Association ended.

The organization confirmed Kristopher worked in a remote position but didn't address why he was let go.

Mandy was a beloved substitute teacher at Grand Haven Area Schools. In January 2026, Grand Haven Public Schools recognized her impact as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary.

"Mandy goes above and beyond for students, especially when they're having a hard day, responding with empathy, patience, and care," school officials said in a statement. "She pours her heart into her work, is always willing to help wherever needed, and helps make Peach Plains a better place to learn and work."

Social media posts appeared to show that Mandy and her daughters had just returned from their trip to China on July 17.

The couple was together for 17 years.

A public memorial service for the murder victims is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Aug. 24 at Harvest Vertical Church, 12900 US-31 in Grand Haven.

The family requests that no photos, audio or video be taken anywhere on the church grounds, including the parking lot.
