A Look Back...A Look Ahead
New and improved Pick of the Week takes sports fans back to the week that was, and ahead to the best match-ups.
First of all, let me start out by saying a big “Thank You,” to everyone who emailed in response to last week’s column. The response was really good, and as a result, this column is going to be better.
Please though, keep these comments, suggestions and ideas coming.
Without your help, I can’t recognize any of the outstanding efforts put in by athletes all over the area – from the little ones all the way to our senior citizens. Everyone has a place on Patch.com, and in this column.

This week we’re going to take a few moments to take a look back at some of the week’s highlight’s, as well as look forward to some of the events you might want to catch over the next week or so.
We’re not going to go into a lot of detail – that’s really not the purpose of this column.

Instead, we’re going to touch on these things and bring them to your attention every week. Some of these items you’ll find amongst the sports articles published on the site, while others you might look forward to seeing in the week ahead.
A Look Back…
- Yet another classic in the boys basketball rivalry between GPN and GPS. This time, it was North in OT, 69-64 Feb. 11 at GPN. Whew! Already looking forward to the time these two teams square off – perhaps for a district title in a few weeks? It’ll be tough, but anything can happen.
- Hats off to the boys hockey squads from GPS, Liggett and GPN. Each of these squads performed admirable in the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Showcase this past weekend – against the top teams in the state, and parts of Canada!
- We give credit to the girls hoops squad from South, who, once again, are in position to capture a MAC White title this season. The girls are 9-1 in the division, and in control. Way to go, Coach Richards, and the rest of the squad.
A Look Ahead…
- We’ll stay on the hardwood and with the Lady Blue Devils. Be sure to catch them this Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at home against a very game Warren Cousino squad. Plus, if you’ve never seen the Blue Devils play, you’re in for a treat. They are very exciting and very well-coached, and, some would say, play the game the right way.
- In girls hockey, the Lady Knights play host to GPS Feb. 15, at McCann Arena. The game gets underway at 5:45. Junior Haleigh Bolton and her Liggett teammates face off with the Blue Devils in a match-up of two pretty evenly matched clubs. Should be an exciting hockey game at McCann.
- One last thing: I found a cool new sport that everyone, senior citizens in particular, should give a try - Pickleball. I know it sounds funny, but it's a lot of fun. Check it out this week at Beaumont's Bon Brae Center in St.Clair Shores, and check out the feature story running right here on Patch.com.
