Grosse Pointe South HS Hockey Coach Charged With Sexual Assault: Prosecutor

School officials said the man is no longer involved in the district's athletic program.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, MI — A Grosse Pointe South hockey coach is facing a sexual assault charge, according to prosecutors.

Benjamin Warda, 38, of Grosse Pointe Farms, was charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

He was placed in jail with a $50,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for July 14.

"My office recognizes the courage it takes for victims of sexual assault to come forward," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said. "We are grateful to those who report these crimes and to the professionals who work to investigate them with care and sensitivity."

Warda was the coach of the Grosse Pointe South High School's Varsity Boys' ice hockey team, the Blue Devils, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

School officials said Warda is no longer involved in the district's athletic program.
