Frozen in GP

In a world of ice cream and frozen yogurt, we have it covered.

Do we have a lot of frozen dessert options in Grosse Pointe?  Yes, we do.   There are frozen yogurt and ice cream stores all over the place.  In the Village alone there are three.  On Mack Avenue there are four and I am sure there is one somewhere I don’t know about (OK, even though it isn’t technically in Grosse Pointe, I am going to count Wally’s Frozen Custard just because it is close enough and really yummy).

What is interesting to me is that it almost seems as traditional hand dipped ice creams are a thing of the past and the “add your own toppings” ice cream/yogurt is where all the action is.   Who doesn’t like to add whatever they want to their ice cream?  Sure you can order any flavor you want anyway, but there is something about dumping an entire scoop of broken toffee pieces over your ice cream that is very appealing (or in my son’s case and heaping scoop of gummi bears).

TCBY and YogoHut (now open on Mack Ave) both allow you to dump your own toppings on your frozen yogurt.  It is a sort of frozen yogurt salad bar.  At TCBY they handle the yogurt part and hand over the bowl for you to pile on the toppings.  At YogoHut, the entire process is in your hands--yogurt, toppings and all.  You just weigh it at the end and off you go!  (Warning to parents, this situation can get out of hand quickly as I learned when I gave my 7 year old a large bowl and let him go to town…32 oz later…lesson learned)

Cold Stone Creamery has been doing this with ice cream for years, except they fold it all in for you on a “cold stone”.  Again, most kids pick gummi bears, which by the way harden and become really gross when frozen.

So, as you see there are endless options for your frozen sweet tooth.  Whether you like your ice cream mixed up and ready to order, or you like to do it all of yourself, you can find just about anything you want...so go eat something frozen today!

My new favorite recipe concocted at YogoHut
1 part Cake Batter yogurt
1 part Reeces Peanut Butter yogurt
1 scoop brownie bits
3 large squirts of peanut butter syrup
1 large squirt of caramel syrup
