Rutgers Coach Mike Rice Fired after Video Goes Viral. NCAA to intervene?

Thoughts on potential NCAA sanctions on Rutgers University over recent firing of Mike Rice.

Yet another scandal has been brought up in the world of college sports. Only this time we go from the outside confines of a football field, to the indoor world of the basketball court. Rutgers Head Coach Mike Rice was fired yesterday after a practice video which went viral on Tuesday, was discovered by media and school officials. On the video, Rice is shown verbally and physically abusing his players with shoves, pushes, grabs, dragging, and even racial and homophobic slurs.

Rice admitted his wrongdoing in a press conference yesterday, apologizing and deeply regretting his actions. Unfortunately, his apology was not enough to save his job, and will not make up for the physical, emotional, and mental abuse his players went through.

An investigation into criminal charges has already been started by the University against Rice. No doubt the NCAA will be investigating as they have done many times before with situations like this. They will likely impose their own sanctions on Rutgers University.

I hope this time they do the right thing and pursue charges against only those responsible for this terrible incident, mainly Mike Rice and anyone who tried to cover it up. I also hope they handle this matter without any fallout to the players and their team records. Other people like players should not have to pay for the actions of Mike Rice and anyone else who was involved.
