On Friday, January 31, The Naples Daily News carried this front page article about Commander Robert E. Griffith, USN (Ret) effort to get the NFL to make a short, simple announcement when our National Anthem was played. I could not believe that they failed to do so.
If you didn't open the above link to the article, originally published by the The Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, Illinois, the story was simply about CDR Griffith's campaign to have the NFL announce: ‘As now authorized by the United States Congress, all veterans of the Armed Forces are invited to render the military hand salute.’ ”
How could the NFL be so ignorant? Rather than honoring our veterans, they chose to ignore them.
I propose all veterans boycott watching NFL televised games. Sunday football is a popular event at my local AMVETS Post, but I suggest we put a funeral drape around the screen for the next Detroit Lions game and tape an appropriate announcement to the large flat screen TV: "RIP NLF - WE WILL IGNORE YOU UNTIL YOU STOP IGNORING US". I can guarantee you an AP news photo on this ... it's a no-brainer. But, then again, so was CDR Griffith's request.
Send me an e-mail if you agree. And, please share this with your fellow veterans.
My letter to the editor of the Naples News was published in their on-line edition yesterday. I've sent a similar letter to Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner. I suspect he'll simply ignore my letter, as he ignored our veterans during the Super Bowl. His address is National Football League, 345 Parke Avenue, New York, NY 10065.
