As part of a two-week safety course covering topics like stranger danger, bicycle safety and even environmental responsibility, about 40 children practiced escaping a smoky house Tuesday.
There are several sessions of the annual Safety Town summer camp on the grounds of . The current session has about 40 children and ends Friday.
The children were guided through a fire safety house complete with smoke generated by a machine. They learned the techniques of escaping a burning house and how to maneuver in smoky conditions.

The two-week annual camp is designed for children who are entering kindergarten in the fall and covers a broad range of safety topics, such as stranger danger, bicycle/pedestrian/water safety, first aid, dialing 911 and more.
Emergency responders from the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods help teach the course and following the fire safety practice, the children toured a fire truck and were even allowed to spray a hose hooked up to a fire hydrant.
