Police Blotter: Woods Resident Interrupts Man Removing Window Screen

A resident likely interrupted what would have been a burglary when she saw a man standing outside her living room windows and removing one of the screens. The woman was watching television in her pajamas at her home in the 1000 block of Cook Road when she heard a knock at the door. She decided not to answer because of how she was dressed but went back to the living room to see the man removing the screen. She then opened the door and confronted the  man. He told her he was working on the windows of the neighbor and had been asked to come look at her windows. Then told her one of her screen's was falling out. The woman told him he had no business being on the porch, told him to leave and then locked her door and called police. Officers searched the area but did not find the man. They did talk with the neighbor, who said no one was working on her windows, according to a report.

Purse Stolen from Woods Resident

A 57-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods woman reported her wallet stolen after returning home from to discover she did not have it. She thought at first she left it behind on the counter when she purchased stamps but then when she called to report her credit card missing, a representative told her gas had just been purchased--indicating to her it was stolen because she hadn't just purchased gas, according to the report.

Car Damaged in Attempted Theft at St. John's

Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating the attempted theft of a car from the lot of . The car belongs to an employee who parked in the lot July 16 about 4:45 p.m. and then the next morning when her shift was over she went to leave and found damage to the lock near as well as to the steering column, according to a report.

Copper Pipes Stolen from Hunt Club Drive Home Overnight

Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating the theft of copper piping from a vacant home on Hunt Club Drive. Officers determined someone entered the home through a window, which was checked for fingerprints, and exited through a door that is used frequently. Due to the high usage of the door, the officers did not look for fingerprints near the exit point. The theft was discovered by the homeowner, who recently purchased it and is working to fix it up. He had been working on the house until late July 15 and when he returned early July 16 discovered the piping gone. The dropped ceiling in the basement was ripped out and the cooper piping had been cut out, according to a report.

Battery of Teenager Under Investigation

Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating the battery of a 14-year-old resident after parents of her friend called to report one of them had to intervene to stop the mother from hitting the girl. The friend and parents had been at the girl's house to pick her up for a sleepover at their house. The mother said it was ok initially but asked that her daughter take her medication before leaving. While in the car, the mother changed her mind about the girl going. The girl jumped out and jumped into the friend's parents car. The mother got out and while trying to pull the girl from the car, she hit her on the head and face repeatedly. The parent of the friend stepped between the pair to stop it. When responding officers arrived, the woman admitted to drinking during the day but declined to say how much. A week earlier, police had been called to the same home because a neighbor reported that the mother cursed at her. The mother told responding officers she was tired of police coming to her house and she said she would not bother the neighbor but did not admit cursing at her. She said the neighbor calls police on her all the time, according to a report.

Fight Reported at Sunrise Between 2 Residents with Dementia

Grosse Pointe Woods police were called to after the staff discovered one resident attacked another resident. Both residents suffer from severe dementia. The pair have not gotten along in the past but normally the door to the one resident's door is locked. The staff reported they did not witness the fight but one of the men had cuts to his arms and on one of his elbows. The staff said they intend to have one of the men moved to a psychiatric hospital, according to a report.

40-Foot Tree Cut by Neighbor Without Permission

A 77-year-old resident filed a police report about her neighbors possibly cutting off the top of her tree. The woman discovered the top of the tree missing June 30 upon returning home from out of town. The woman said a neighbor who lives behind her had asked her in the past to cut it down, the tree was approximately 40 feet tall, but she had declined. She believes the tree had been cut while she was out of town. The backyard neighbor admitted to hiring a contractor to cut down the tree. The contractor told police the backyard neighbor said the tree was in the easement of his property, not belonging to his neighbor and that he had permission to get it cut down by the neighbor. The tree is about 12-feet away from the property line. The contractor said crews had to cut it as much as they did because upon starting the job they discovered the tree had been damaged by lightning. In order to make it safe, crews had to cut it down, he told officers. The officers documented the situation, which is something the resident will have to handle through civil court, according to a report.
