State of the Pistons in the 2013-14 Season

Last season was a tumutulous year for the Detroit Pistons. They finished 29-53 and really did not live up to the expectations of their owner Tom Gores. He expected the Pistons to make the playoffs last year, and they fell well short of the mark.

Obviously changes will need to be made in order for the Pistons to compete, rebuild, and get better. Here are my predictions for who will and will not be back next season:

Will Bynum

STATUS WITH TEAM: Was a good contributor off the bench, but other times looked over-matched and out of sorts. Has alot of marketability however, but could be traded to get younger players.

VERDICT: Trade Bait; Won't be back.

Jose Calderon

STATUS WITH TEAM: Was a good pickup in a trade last year. Has the potential to be a breakout player. Pistons want him back, but they'll have to pay heavily to re-sign him.

VERDICT: Will return if the price is good, otherwise he likely will shop the free agent market.

Andre Drummond

STATUS WITH TEAM: When healthy, he was one of their bright spots. When hurt, he really hindered their progress. Drummond is a talented player who can help turn this team around, but staying healthy is a big concern for him right now.

VERDICT: Definitely will be back; How much he plays depends on whether or not he can stay healthy.

Kim English

STATUS WITH TEAM: Contributed alot in limited action last season when the Pistons playoff hopes were all but done. Likely will return to develop his skills.

VERDICT: Will return for another season.

Jonas Jerebko

STATUS WITH TEAM: A key player who can also turn this team around. He's in the final year of his contract though, so he needs a good year.

VERDICT: Will return; Staying healthy is a must!

Brandon Knight

STATUS WITH TEAM: Definitely the future of this franchise. Not only will he need to stay healthy though, he must develop himself better and become one of the unsung leaders of this team.

VERDICT: Will return.

Slava Kratsov

STATUS WITH TEAM: Saw limited action last season. Not sure if he fits in with the Pistons plans for this season.

VERDICT: Likely trade bait if he doesn't fit in with the Pistons plans.

Cory Maggette

STATUS WITH TEAM: Why did the Pistons even trade for this guy if not to utilize his assets? It seems like a wasted move as he played in a number of games to start the season, then was benched for the remainder of the year. This is definitely a move Joe Dumars will admit was a stupid one.

VERDICT: Trade bait.

Jason Maxiell

STATUS WITH TEAM: Was inconsisently good last year. At times however he seemed to be overmatched by his size and inability to hit shots effectively. Another marketable player who can be dealt for numerous players.

VERDICT: Likely will be traded; If not in the offseason, then during the season.

Khris Middleton

STATUS WITH TEAM: Also thrived in increased minutes down the stretch last year. Likely will be brought back to add some depth to a very short bench.

VERDICT: Likely will return.

Greg Monroe

STATUS WITH TEAM: No question the team's MVP last season. Time-and-time again he showed why he's a future star in this league. The rebuilding of this franchise rests alot on the progress he can make.

VERDICT: Definitely will return.

Kyle Singler

STATUS WITH TEAM: Big piece of the Pistons plans right now. This guy has the potential to be a breakout player too. His 3-point shot is deadly and will be a key for the Pistons success next year.

VERDICT: Will return.

Rodney Stuckey

STATUS WITH TEAM: This was a BAD year for Stuckey. He constantly clashed with teammates, coaches, and ownership, and found himself in the doghouse way too many times last year earning himself benchings and reprimands. Personally I think he's a cancer to the team right now and they probably could do without him, but he still has tremendous long-term potential that another team could utilize.

VERDICT: Likely will be traded in order to pick up some fresh new players.

Charlie Villaneuva

STATUS WITH TEAM: Probably one of the biggest busts for the Pistons right now. He has problems staying healthy, playing consistently good, and relationships with teammates. Likely won't return.

VERDICT: Trade Bait.

Honestly, the Pistons expectations probably aren't very high, but with a new coach and a new attitude, hopefully they can find a way to turn things around and start rebuilding.
