Woods Teen to Perform in DSO Program Concert

Myles Harlan of Grosse Pointe Woods will perform this weekend in the Civic Experience concert as part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Civic Youth Ensembles training program.

A Grosse Pointe Woods teen will join hundreds of Detroit area children this weekend in the Civic Experience concert at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit.

Myles Harlan, 16, of Grosse Pointe Woods, will play the oboe in the fall Civic Experience, an annual civic youth ensemble performance showcasing the work of students enrolled in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Civic Youth Ensembles training program, according to an article in The Detroit News.

"We're encouraged to think of ourselves as soloists, and every week we're responsible for getting our parts down as if were we going to perform in a concert," Harlan said of the training program in the Detroit News article.

The News article said Harlan is in his fifth year with the training program and participates along with more than a thousand Detroit area children, from third-graders to high school seniors, in one of the 18 classical and jazz ensembles. The students receive training from DSO musicians and guest conductors.

The Civic Experience concerts are 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6. Ticket prices start at $12 and are available on the DSO website.
