1. Firefighters respond to blaze behind Great Lakes Custom Meats and More (bluewaterhealthyliving.com) — A pre-dawn fire on Aug. 17 destroyed a storage building behind Great Lakes Custom Meats and More, drawing a large response from the Howell Area Fire Department and neighboring departments. The blaze wiped out equipment for the owners' Michigan Food Equipment Company, but they say that business will continue and emphasize that the popular meat market on East Highland Road remains open and unaffected.
2. Howell Public Schools Reaches New Contracts with Three Collective Bargaining Units (whmi.com) — Howell Public Schools has finalized new contracts with its teachers, support staff, and custodial/maintenance employees just before the new school year, including annual wage and step increases. Agreements with the Howell Education Association and Howell Educational Support Personnel Association run through 2028, while the custodial and maintenance contract extends to 2029, aiming to keep staff pay competitive and stable.
3. ART Doing Good plans second community mural at Collective Howell (livingstondaily.com) — A new community mural is being planned for the side of Collective Howell at 214 S. Michigan Ave., and residents are being asked to help shape its design. ART Doing Good, the nonprofit behind June's "Reflections" mural welcoming visitors to downtown Howell, has posted a QR code on the wall where you can share stories, images, or videos to inspire the artwork.
4. Michigan environmental advocates say to be on lookout for invasive red swamp crawfish, stiltgrass (cbsnews.com) — Invasive species experts are warning Livingston County residents, especially around Howell High School, to watch for destructive red swamp crawfish recently found on campus. Locals are encouraged to remove the marked, spotty-clawed crawfish when safe and report suspicious finds, while also pulling invasive stiltgrass along forest edges, roadsides, and parking lots to help protect local habitats.
5. Zenith Returns to Michigan for Kitbuilding Workshop (planeandpilotmag.com) — An aviation kitbuilding workshop is coming back to Howell October 9–10 at a private hangar at Livingston County Airport, giving locals a chance to build a rudder section with expert guidance. Organized with support from area builders and Midwest Flying Machines, the two-day session ends with a Zenith fly-in for regional pilots and enthusiasts.
