LESA STUDENT AND COORDINATOR SHARE ADULT TRANSITIONS STORY WITH HOWELL ROTARY CLUB

By Jennifer Trackwell

Although the Adult Transitions (AT) Program has been part of Livingston Educational Services Agency (LESA) since 1975, many local business leaders don’t know a lot about it. So, AT Student Ryan West and Program Coordinator Jennifer Trackwell recently paid a visit to the Howell Rotary Club to share the program’s benefits for both students and businesses.

The AT Program is a set of coordinated activities designed to help students move from school activities to post-school activities, increasing their independence. Along with vocational training, students also learn about independent living and community participation.

“But without the business community helping, our students won’t get the work experience they really need,” said Trackwell.

The program’s business partners, accept two or three students and a job coach for a period of six weeks. The job coach provides on-site training, helping students perform their jobs accurately, efficiently and safely.

Trackwell emphasized the importance of communication with business partners.

“During the six week period, we communicate regularly with the job sites to ensure the students are doing well and make adjustments if necessary, said Trackwell.

Ryan was asked what he learned from the AT Program that helped him land his job as a service clerk with VG’s Grocery. He replied, “I do what I’m asked and showed them a very positive attitude.” And how does he like his new job? “I can’t even pick one thing I like best, because I like it all.”

The program can be a great help to businesses, too. At students perform various tasks to assist businesses in their day-to-day operations.

“We also like to have our students work at various sites to gain multiple skills to assist them as they seek employment and independence. So, I’d love to see more businesses get involved.”
