Baker College buckles up for annual car, motorcycle show May 17

More than 300-plus cars and motorcycles will be on display at the sixth annual Baker College of Flint Car and Motorcycle Show.

The sixth annual Baker College of Flint Car and Motorcycle Show will be Sunday, May 17, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enthusiasts are invited to showcase their cars and motorcycles for other aficionados, as well as the general public, at Baker College’s Center for Transportation Technology (CTT), 1717 S. Dort Highway, Flint. Admission is free.

“It’s always great to bring together area car and motorcycle enthusiasts to show off their hard work, as well as exhibit the CTT and the work our students have accomplished in their classes,” said Phillip Whitmer, Baker College of Flint dean of transportation technology.

In previous years, more than 350 cars and motorcycles have been displayed. Most of the vehicles are owned by community members; several are refurbished by students in Baker College’s automotive body and repair programs. This year, one entry that’s designed and built by Baker College students is a custom-made bobber motorcycle.

Vehicles displayed at previous Baker College car shows include a 1911 Whiting, a 1923 T Bucket, a 1940 Ford coupe, a 1942 Harley Davidson and a 2013 Mustang and 2014 Hyundai that were upgraded and renovated by Baker College of Flint students. Auto clubs have brought multiple cars to previous events.

There is no cost to enter cars or motorcycles in the show, and pre-registration is not necessary.

For the 2015 event, Baker College will present awards for the top 25 cars, top 10 motorcycles, President’s Choice, Dean’s Choice and Best of Show.

New this year is a trophy for the top vehicle—a car or motorcycle—exhibited by a person age 18 years or younger. Whitmer said that this award will encourage young adults and students in automotive programs at area skill centers and high schools to show off their work.

There will also music, refreshments and on-going tours of the CTT facility.

Due to construction at I-69 and Dort Highway, attendees should exit I-69 at Center Road, head south to Lapeer Road, then west to Dort Highway.

Parking at Perani Arena is recommended. There is a shuttle service running to and from the CTT throughout the show.
