Baker College students awarded Michigan Accountancy Foundation Scholarships

For two consecutive years, a Baker College student has been among 20 recipients of this scholarship funded by MACPA members.

For two consecutive years, Baker College of Owosso students have been awarded Michigan Accountancy Foundation (MAF) scholarships.

Kelly Hewitt, of New Lothrop, is the 2016 recipient of the $3,000 scholarship. Kimberly Thelen, of Fowler, received it in 2015. They are among approximately 20 Michigan students each year who have benefited from MAF scholarships.

MAF awards annual scholarships to build diversity in the accounting profession, increase the number of students graduating from accounting programs who will make a positive impact on the accounting profession, and to assist collegiate accounting majors in funding their fifth/graduate year.

“Being chosen to receive such a highly sought-after scholarship is an honor for the students and reflects the quality of the Baker College accounting program,” said Aaron J. Maike, Baker College of Owosso president. “We congratulate Kelly and Kimberly and are proud they represent Baker College at the state level.”

Hewitt expects to graduate June 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting; Thelen will graduate in June 2016 with a bachelor’s in business administration with majors in accounting and business management.

Thelen works as a student assistant at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and hopes to gain a career position with the state of Michigan after graduation.

MAF scholarship awards are based on a number of criteria including scholastic merit, leadership, intent to pursue certified public accountant status, time remaining until degree completion and others. The scholarship fund is supported by members of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, professional firms and other CPA leaders.
