Is a Picture Worth a Thousand Words?

When reading a good books, are you more interested in the story line or the illustrations?

Since gardening season is right around the corner, I thought it would only be appropriate to share an incredible book that has outstanding illustrations with you. Have you read A Garden for Pig yet?

This book was written by Kathryn Thurman and the illustrations were created by Lindsay Ward. A Garden for Pig is a heart-warming story of a cute little pig that lives on an apple farm and the pig just wants to eat some vegetables instead of having apples for every meal. So, the pig ends up growing his own organic garden. It is a fun story to read and you can take what you have learned from the story and use it in your only life.

But this book has more that a great story line. Its cut paper illustrations are incredible. Every single piece to every object and character have been cut out by Lindsay Ward herself. As an educational consultant and supervisor for EDC Publishing, I was lucky enough to work with Lindsay and see some of her original art work from A Garden for Pig. This book truly supports the idea of a picture being worth a thousand words.

Remember to talk about the illustrations in each story you are reading to your children. Ask open-ended questions to discover more on their thought process. I am sending out a challenge to all who are interested in taking it on. The next time you read a book with your family, try picking one page to discuss in detail. See if you can make that picture worth a thousand words.
