Detroit Area Students Can See Movie 'Selma' For Free

Here are the details on who's eligible for the #SelmaForStudents effort, how to get a free ticket and where to see the movie.

The #SelmaForStudents effort has come to the metro Detroit area and starting Friday, Jan. 16, and continuing through Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19, seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students can see the movie Selma for free.

The limited, free admission program is being led by a team of African-American business leaders in New York, with organizations across the U.S. coordinating a massive national campaign to find African-American business leaders to underwrite free admission to the film Selma for students around the country, according to SelmaStudentTickets.com.

Because of the success in New York City where 27,000 students saw the movie, dozens of cities across the country, including several in the Detroit area, have been added to the program.

Students need to show a school ID card or their report card for free admission, according to SelmaStudentTickets.com. Tickets are available while the supply lasts.

The program was expanded with generous donations from many of the country’s most prominent African-American business leaders, to allow more than 275,000 students nationwide to see the award-winning movie starring David Oyelowo, Oprah Winfrey and Carmen Ejogo.

  • AMC Star Southfield 20, 25333 12 Mile Road, Southfield
  • Bel Air 10 Theater, Bel Air Center, 10100 East 8 Mile Road, Detroit
  • Emagine, Twelve Mile Crossing at Fountain Walk, 44425 12 Mile Road, Novi
  • MJR Marketplace Digital Cinema 20, 35400 Van Dyke Avenue, Sterling Heights
