Civil War Commemoration

The Huron Valley Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration presents events, programs, observances and service appropriate to commemorate the Civil War Sesquicentennial in the Huron Valley.

A commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial in the Huron Valley features an 1861-Era Wedding at 4 p.m. Saturday, followed by a wedding reception in Central Park.

The day starts off with an 11 a.m. opening ceremony in Milford's Central Park including:

  • "President Lincoln"
  • Civil War Re-enactors
  • The 5th Michigan Regimental Band
  • Custer and Soldiers
  • American Legion Post 216
  • American Veterans, Masons, and Knights of Columbus

All day in Central Park, the following people/events are featured: demonstrations/displays, children's activities, storytellers, musicians, Civil War enlistment and drills and a Zonta Club baking contest.

Elsewhere, in historical Oak Grove, West Highland and Highland cemeteries from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, you can honor Civil War Veterans and learn about the lives of the veterans who are interred in the cemeteries. Sories of the regiments, displays, and photos. "President Lincoln" will speak.

Other, off-site events include an ice cream social with Mary Todd Lincoln from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at 648 Canal Street in Milford. Hear about Mary Lincoln's life, gossip, and fashion, while enjoying ice cream and goodies. Pre- purchase ticket, which will give you the directions. Cost is a $5 donation.

And finally, another ticket for a Saturday event that should be pre-purchased is your ticket for the Civil War Ball at Milford's American Legion Hall at 7 p.m.; the hall is located 510 W. Commerce Road in Milford. Food and a cash bar are available.

In addition to these special events, the Milford Library hosts Civil War Displays and Art the entire month of June.
