Flowers, Volunteers Needed for Hartland Students' Beautification Project

Alyssa Mattucci and Marissa Mattioli are organizing a community beautification project for their school's FCCLA group.

Two Hartland High School juniors are organizing a community beatification project that will include a clean-up effort and planting of trees.

Alyssa Mattucci and Marissa Mattioli are the environmental ambassadors for the high school’s Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), a community service group that each year picks a project to complete.

“Last year we picked up trash at Kensington Metro park, so this year we just wanted to expand on that,” junior Alyssa Mattuci said.

The two students will be teaming up with the Heart of Michigan Girl Scout Troupe on March 24 to clean up the park and will be planting trees at the high school, Hartland Middle School and other local businesses on April 10.

This April, Hartland’s FCCLA group of 11 students will be attending a state conference in Midland where each group will be presenting their four different community projects for a chance to qualify for the national conference in Tennessee.

“We all have categories, and then we choose a project that relates to the category,” Mattioli said.

Last year, Mattuci and Mattioli received silver medals in both the state and national conference for their community project.

Organizing this year’s project, the Hartland juniors say that learning to network in the community and learning from others how to be more creative is a fun process.

“We’ve learned to become more involved in our community and be more careful of how we dispose our own trash,” Mattioli said.

Trees and mulch have already been donated to the project by Superior Landscape and Preiss Sod Farm along with more donations coming from Venture Corners, Deerfield Township, Rockhill Duplexes and Mattioli Cement.

The project is still in need of flowers to plant and anyone willing to volunteer on either March 24 or Arpil 10 is asked to leave a comment on the story.
