Fire Destroys Barn in Hartland

WITH VIDEO AND PICTURES: Firefighters return to battle hot spots Tuesday.

Firefighters returned Tuesday to snuff out hot spots and assist the owner’s son in leveling a barn that was destroyed by fire Monday night in the 13000 block of Clyde Road near Tipsico Lake Road on Hartland Township’s east side.

There were no injuries, but bales of straw and some equipment were lost. The cause is unknown.

“The fire marshal will be out later today to poke through it and see what he can figure out,” said Sgt. Matt Whitmore of the Hartland-Deerfield Fire Authority, a member of a crew who returned at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

James Clark, a 50-year-old neighbor who came over to help with the cleanup, said it’s always sad when an older barn is destroyed, noting a horse barn in Oceola Township that recently was ablaze.

“You hate to see it,” Clark said.  “They were all made hand-hewed and put together with pegs. It’s just a shame.”

Firefighters received a call around 9 p.m. Monday with Hartland, Howell and Brighton fire departments responding to the scene, he said. The fire was under control in about 30-45 minutes, Whitmore said.
