Hartland Man Pleads Guilty to Larceny Charges After Fraudulently Ordering $160K in Computer Parts

Scott Alan Stead pleaded guilty in a case involving more than $160K worth of fraudulent warranty computer replacement parts.

A 55-year-old Hartland Township man pleaded guilty to three counts of larceny by false pretenses in exchange for prosecutors dismissing multiple counts he used a computer to commit those crimes, according to the Press & Argus.

According to a previous police report, Scott Alan Stead was accused of knowingly ordering replacement parts for computers using serial numbers from machines he did not own and then selling some of the parts for profit.

The case involved more than $80,000 worth of fraudulent warranty replacement parts from the time period of August 2009 to August 2011. After further investigation, Hewlett Packard discovered the total loss amount for the computer parts was more than .

The prosecution will recommend that Stead receive no more than a 12 to 24 month prison sentence, according to the Press and Argus and agreed not to issue charges against Dell or IBM. 

The plea deal also calls for Stead to pay $155,000 in restitution, according to the report.
