Lock Down Practice Drill at Hartland Senior Center 2-18-15

False security! Gun registration, gun background checks, gun safety classes, mental health treatment, hot line for security threats!

Last Weds, Feb 18th, Seniors were asked to participate in a Locked Down Drill. We were told to hide away from the windows so that the “Shooter” would think no one was in the room and leave us alone. I used to hide under my desk in school in the 1950’s to protect myself in case of an atomic bomb attack. I realize now that hiding under my desk was giving me false security. I felt very foolish participating in the Locked Down Drill as I wasn’t interested in keeping myself safe at the expense of letting the shooter go down the halls and find other victims.

Instead of asking Seniors to participate in Lock Down Drills for our safety, let’s ask Seniors to call and advocate for gun legislation, background checks, gun safety classes, mental health treatment and follow up, a hot line for security threats. We have a sex offender registry, why not a gun registry? Lets talk about keeping the whole community safe whether they are in school, in church, in the grocery store, at the library, etc.

Advocate with your legislators, especially Senator Joe Hune in our district, who voted for gun legislation that would have allowed people with Personal Protection Orders against them to carry a concealed weapon. Does that make any sense to you? Governor Snyder vetoed it. Keep in touch with your legislators at the State and Federal level and ask them to listen to you instead of the National Rifle Association which is more concerned with 2nd amendment rights and not your community’s safety.
