Police Briefs: Historic Parshallville Grist Mill Vandalized; Home Under Construction Hit in Tyrone

After word spread that the beloved was vandalized last week, neighborhood residents have been asked to keep a lookout while a Livingston County commissioner is seeking tips on suspects.

But co-owner Jack Detlefs says at this point, he'd rather downplay the incident in which a port-a-john and trash cans were knocked over and boards were removed from a footbridge Oct. 4 sometime between 6:30-7 p.m.

In addition, someone with a pellet gun shot the mill's beehive on Oct. 5. All the damage has since been repaired and Detlefs said he thinks the culprits are teens from the area who he's confident he can find and work with the parents to resolve the situation.

Detlefs said while he spoke with the Livingston County Sheriff's Department, he hasn't filed a report and wants to be careful about going overboard.

"It was very minor," Detlefs said. "We're tracking the kids down. We'll get them to take the trash out for a week or two. … We've dealt with a lot of stuff over the years."

Detlefs' comments follow a week in which an email seeking help from neighbors was posted on the Parshallville Community Association website and County Commissioner David Domas, who lives on nearby Lake Shannon, sent an email to neighbors encouraging them to call the sheriff's department if they know who did it.

"It's a signature establishment of our community," Domas said. "It's important we find the vandals. … It will not be tolerated."

Cooktop, faucet stolen from home under construction

A gas cooktop and faucet from a kitchen area with a combined $1,700 value were reported stolen from a home under construction in Tyrone Township, according to the Livingston County Sheriff's Department.

A 35-year-old woman who owns the home told police the incident occurred between Sept. 27 and Sept. 28 on Wind Song Court in the Hills of Tyrone subdivision just south of Fenton. It is one of three homes currently being built.

The woman said the main garage door was left open, but the door leading inside had been locked as well as the front door. A sliding glass door in the basement had no lock.
