Seven Hartland Wrestlers Advance for Individual State Title Shots

Three win regionals while Cheney captures coach award.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP β€” Hartland High School qualified seven out its 12 wrestlers Saturday for the individual state finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills in two weeks as three won regional titles.

Freshman Austin Eicher (112) and seniors Chase Snider (145) and John Julien (152) all finished first; seniors Keith Boldt (119) and Chad Hunt (160) took second; and senior Ross Kantola (125) and junior Justin Charneski (171) took fourth. (Click PDF, for complete results).

In the meantime, Hartland head coach Todd Cheney won the Regional Head Coach of the Year award. Saturday's event at L’Anse Creuse High School was one of four Division 1 regionals across the state.

According to Cheney, every wrestler on the team had the talent to qualify for the Palace, but some had some real tough match-ups. He says he's especially proud of the freshmen, considering where they were at the beginning of the season.

"It was a pretty good day overall," Cheney said. "(It's) hard to say we're disappointed, but the match-ups were what they were. We wrestled hard and just didn't make it all out."

The Eagles are off until they head to Battle Creek for the team states that beginΒ  Friday with the quarterfinals. The individual finals will be held March 3-5.
